Setting Weight Loss Goals:
Weight loss goals must be practical, realistic and specific.
Sherry Pence
How many times have you started a weight loss program, just to end up feeling discouraged,
deprived and frustrated? Most of us have been there. We get excited and enthusiastic about
a new program or diet and we are convinced that this time we will lose that 20, 50, or 100 lbs.
Then what happens? We lose our enthusiasm and become discouraged when we do not see
the scale moving as quickly as we would like it to. There are a few keys to effective and long-
term weight loss. One of those keys is to set realistic weight loss goals. You may be thinking,
“Well, I set goals last time and didn’t succeed!” First let’s look at the type of goals that you set
the last time. Were your goals results-based? Such as, losing 20 lbs in one month? Were
your goals broad or general? Such as, get in shape by summer? To be successful at losing
weight we have to set realistic, specific and activity-based goals. We have come to “grips” with
the fact that we did not gain the weight over night and it will not go away over night. This “I
want it now” mentality causes us to set unrealistic and sometimes dangerous weight loss
goals. If you want to lose weight you must start by setting realistic and specific, small, medium
and long-term goals. Your long term goals may have a tendency to be more general; however
you must be specific and realistic in your smaller and medium sized goals. The small and
medium sized goals are your road map to your long-term goals. So where do you start with
creating your weight loss road map? Right here! On this page you will find tips, articles and
resources for creating your own weight loss road map. As well as exercise ideas, motivation
secrets and free printable routines and charts to help you meet your goals.
