Being a Stay at Home Mom
Today’s Stay-at-Home-Mom is a great deal different from the SAHM of the 1950’s, well
different from what we pictured the SAHM to be. You know the perfectly-put-together Mom
that could get a hot breakfast on the table and still look as if she had stepped out of a
magazine. Not a hair out of place not a screaming child in the house just compliant children
and an appreciative husband. Well, that is not the SAHM of today in fact I am pretty sure she
was not the SAHM of the 1950’s she was simply a “Hollywood” version of what a typical
mother should be like. Boy were we ever dooped! Those women who are stay at home
Mothers occasionally have this feeling that they need to measure up to some standard set by
an imaginary wife and mother on a 1950’s sitcom. Well, it is time that the truth was told,
being a stay at home mom is not glamorous, easy or for the faint of heart! There are diapers
to change, butts to wipe, teeth to brush, laundry to start, breakfast to fix and dishes to wash,
and that is all usually before eight o’clock in the morning.
Woman's Guide to
There are also the sibling fights to referee, the homework to do, the grocery shopping, the
meal-planning, the house cleaning to accomplish and we can’t forget the quality time that
needs to be spent with each child. In most homes the SAHM also does the bill-paying, event
planning and does this all without adult conversation. Being a SAHM takes self-motivation,
organization and patience. ( I believe that is why many small business entrepreneurs today,
are or have been SAHMs. You learn great customer service, skills. Lol) I guess the point I am
trying to make is that the SAHM of today is actually not that different from the SAHM of
yesterday and both are probably light years away from being the SAHM of the “Silver Screen”,
so if you are a homemaker or stay-at-home-mom take heart and know, the job you do is
priceless and take pride in the choice you have made to be a SAHM. This page is dedicated
to you, and to helping moms at home, find the resources and support that they need.
